In the early 1980s a batch of ex-BOAC Standard VC-10s was purchased from Gulf Air & these were converted into the K2, the first of the tankers. 101 Squadron Brize Norton took delivery of 5 from 1983-1984. In later years, two more batches of airliner VC-10s were also converted & added to the 101 Squadron ranks. The K3 aircraft were 4 ex-East African Supers & the K4 were 5 ex-British Airways Supers. Finally, the original RAF transport VC-10s (10 Squadron) were converted to the K1, with wing pod units only. The K1s main role has remained as transport. The VC-10 was due for retirement in 2000, but it now seems likely that some will continue until 2006.
